Family Therapy Connecting Families
Family therapy can bring a lot of good. We seek to help change perspectives and thoughts, leading to changes in behavior and the development of a happier life.
Traditional therapy can bring a lot of good to the person who may be struggling. Including a patient’s family in the process of healing and growth may be extremely beneficial to the family and the client.
Advantages and Disadvantages
Bringing the family into the picture for family counseling creates an entirely new dynamic. The degree of functionality and support in the family structure has its pros and cons in a person’s life.
Upbringing is one of the most significant determining factors in what type of person we become. Our childhood also affects how we view our world (our paradigm). Also, upbringing may determine how a person will raise their children in the future.
Your parents taught you by their words and example. Your siblings may have had a tremendous effect on you and how you will parent and handle situations. Family systems therapy is paramount for healing individuals and families.
Family therapy can lead to new interactions and new understandings amongst siblings and parents which can bring about new types of feelings and beliefs for the individual going through treatment as well as the rest of the family.
Create Perfection in Family Structure
Something essential for us to keep in mind is that we should never attempt to conquer extensive trials on our own.
Connection breeds change.
We need compassion, empathy, and love to reach new heights. When this comes from within the family structure, it is powerful. Whether you are working towards sobriety, overcoming anxiety and depression, attempting to better relationships, or trying to overcome unwanted or destructive behaviors, having parents and siblings to aid you in that process can make a world of difference. Giving a therapist the opportunity to engage with the entire family can lead to accelerated effects and results.
Without the opportunity to speak to the rest of the household, a therapist can never be acutely aware of the issues that are recurring and cycling within the family. They have no power to do anything about it without access to them.
Benefits of Family Therapy
So what benefits can this have?
How will we help you go about solidifying and repairing family ties?
Due to our education and experience within the field, we understand how to help a family develop real and functional structure. As a family or as individuals, we can’t make something better if we are not aware that there is a problem or if we don’t know how to better our situation.
Our Goal … Help You
Our job at Utah Family Therapy is to help you discuss and assess honestly what is going well in the family structure and what isn’t. From here, we can start growing and developing new habits. Some changes may be uncomfortable, but once the first steps are taken, things become smoother and more comfortable over time.
We help your family develop a well-functioning disciplinary system. It sounds funny, but one of the ways we do this is by facilitating a process of having the children in the family design the disciplinary system.
Once we’ve established healthy guidelines for kids, we have found that often they are quite capable of forming realistic rule-systems to set boundaries and lead household activities.
Interventions can be useful. Having the family host a meeting where they discuss concerns about the individual who is experiencing troubles can sometimes lead to growth. We find that too often these types of discussions can be profoundly shaming. Family talk is essential, more importantly, is that you talk to them the right way.
We Believe in Change
At Utah Family Therapy, we believe in “Positive Language.”
Genuine compassion, empathy, and positive regard motivate change. Shame too often leads to positive short-term results with negative long-term consequences. Encourage and guide family members in a positive way to share their painful feelings and discuss, new circumstances and powerful new ties can begin to emerge.
