Adult Mental Health Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) in Utah

Adult Intensive Outpatient Program

You filled out a form or contacted someone for help at a low point.

Maybe it was late at night, or right after something broke open — an anxiety attack, a moment of complete overwhelm, a day when you couldn’t pretend anymore.

By the time you were called back, you felt a little better. And part of you thought: maybe I don’t need help after all.

We hear this every week. And we want you to know — the version of you who reached out was telling the truth.

If weekly therapy hasn’t been enough. If you keep returning to the same patterns. If you’re functioning on the outside but struggling on the inside — that’s not a personal failure.

That’s a signal you need more support than one hour a week can give you.

That’s exactly what our Adult Mental Health IOP was built for.

What is an Adult Mental Health IOP?

An Adult Mental Health Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is structured, therapist-led treatment that meets multiple times per week — giving you the consistency and community that creates real, lasting change.

It combines group therapy, individual sessions, and evidence-based clinical tools — while you continue living at home, going to work, and managing your daily responsibilities.

IOP is the step between weekly therapy and residential treatment. It’s for adults who need more than an hour a week, but don’t need to check into a residential facility.

At Utah Family Therapy, we take that one step further. Our IOP is built on the belief that healing happens through genuine connection, with your group, with your therapist, and with yourself. When you feel truly seen and supported, not just treated, something shifts. That’s what we’re here to create.

Is This Program Right for You?

Our Adult Mental Health IOP is designed for people who are:

  • Struggling with anxiety that won’t turn off, no matter what you try.
  • Living with depression that makes it hard to get out of bed or feel anything.
  • Carrying trauma that’s been frozen inside for years — affecting your relationships, your work, your sense of self.
  • Going through weekly therapy but not making the progress you need.
  • Stepping down from inpatient or residential care and needing continued structure.
  • Functioning on the outside but falling apart on the inside.
  • Ready to do the real work — and needing a team in their corner to do it.

If you’ve tried other programs and felt like something was missing, a team that genuinely understands, a space where you actually feel safe, that’s what we’ve built.

Program Structure — Built Around Your Life

We offer flexible options designed to fit your schedule:

  • 3–5 days per week.
  • Morning, afternoon, and evening groups — you choose what works.
  • Group therapy + individual sessions combined.
  • Online and in-person options available statewide.
  • Keep working. Keep living. IOP fits around your responsibilities, not the other way around.

Most students begin to notice a real shift within the first two weeks — not because we work fast, but because consistent, genuine support compounds quickly.

What We Treat

Our Adult Mental Health IOP supports people working through:

  • Anxiety disorders & panic attacks.
  • Depression & emotional numbness.
  • Trauma & PTSD.
  • Emotional dysregulation.
  • Life transitions — divorce, job loss, grief, major change.
  • Stress & burnout that weekly therapy hasn’t reached.
  • Relationship patterns connected to past trauma or attachment wounds.

If you’re not sure whether what you’re experiencing qualifies — it probably does. Call us and we’ll help you figure it out.

Why Adults Choose Utah Family Therapy IOP

We could list our credentials. Instead, here’s what our students actually say:

“They helped me analyze myself in a completely different perspective — not the why or the because, but the how and ways to change going forward.”
“I feel safe when I go to therapy.”
“I had tried 5 therapists before coming here. I will never see anyone else.”
“My anxiety just melts away when I come here.”
What makes the difference isn’t just the clinical approach — it’s this:

We’re All About Connection. Every therapist, every facilitator, every interaction is designed to make you feel like you matter and your healing is possible. We don’t believe anyone is a lost cause. We don’t give up on students who haven’t found their way yet. And if we’re not the right fit, we help you find who is.

Healing Is Hard. That's the Point.

Nobody tells you that recovery feels uncomfortable before it feels better.

Getting out of bed when you don’t want to. Showing up to group when every part of you says stay home. Using the skills you’ve been taught when you least feel like it. Calling your therapist after you’ve slipped back into an old pattern.

That’s the pain of discipline — and it’s the only pain that moves you forward.

The alternative is the pain of regret. Staying exactly where you are. Returning to the same patterns. Letting another year pass while things slowly get harder.

Both hurt. Only one changes your life.

Our job is to walk alongside you through the hard part. That’s what we’re here for.

Frequently Asked Questions — Adult IOP

Can I keep my job while attending IOP?
Yes — that’s one of the main reasons IOP exists. We offer morning, afternoon, and evening groups so you can build treatment around your schedule. Most students attend before or after work without disrupting their employment.
I've tried therapy before and it didn't work. Why would IOP be different?
Weekly therapy is one hour, once a week. IOP is 2–3 hours, multiple days per week — plus individual sessions. It’s the difference between a check-in and a full support system. Many students who felt stuck in weekly therapy make significant progress in IOP because the frequency and community create real momentum.
What does a typical IOP session feel like?
Group check-ins, honest sharing, coping skills, grounding exercises, and discussion around what you’re actually going through — not a filtered version. What makes it different is the honesty and the connection with others who get it. Read more about what a real IOP session feels like →
How long does Adult IOP last?

Most students complete the program in 12–16 weeks depending on their needs and progress. Your treatment team will work with you throughout to assess what’s needed.

UTAH FAMILY THERAPY'S UNFILTERED MISSION STATEMENT

Lets face it, who likes to talk about their crap with other people?

If you’re like most clients, you’re used to being judged despite hearing so many people talk about non judgment and when you do open up, it seems like the more you share, the less likely you are to get compassion.

We’ve worked our butts off to create a clinic where the unfiltered, real you, can show up and heal, so dammit give therapy a chance

We love the unfiltered real you, let’s heal together. – Utah Family Therapy Team
